Followed the Ji-Kung group today.
An exciting finish well suited for The Open but the girl who won speaks English. This interpreter bull crap has got to go! The “exiled one” was right. English only!
From the horse’s mouth: I spoke to C. K.’s looper and got the real scoop. They gave Yani an incorrect ruling on the rake job. It was too steep to search from outside the bunker so that’s why the search was done from inside and the Rules Official should have been the one doing the digging. John got the OK from him to assist Yani. Since he was directed by the Official to help, his footprints could have been raked. This was determined afterward by a meeting of other Officials. The advice part was never brought up.
Look who’s talking: At one time yesterday I was voicing my own commentary oblivious to the fact that some of the volunteers were within earshot. Had them cracking up. Maybe I should be in the booth? Have a feeling it wouldn’t be for long.
The quotes just kept coming: One of the spotters was redirected to cover yesterday’s “whiner” and was told to “bring tissues.” When asked how C. K. made bogey on the first hole, the classic line “She missed the putt for par” was offered up. “Choking dog’ was throw into the mix somewhere along the line but the best came late in the day. A spotter reported that “Lincicome’s tee ball on sixteen was wide right” which prompted Steve Lee to respond “So was Scott Norwood’s kick in the Super Bowl.”
Look who’s here: I also ran into former LPGA pro Tara Fleming yesterday. She was enjoying the action with beer in hand. Is there any other way?
What’s happening up there? I was hoping for some updates on A. J. Eathorne’s blog (she’s looping for Grant Fuhr) but there’s bupkis!
Adios, ta-ta, auf wiedersehen: No matter how you say it, it’s still goodbye. One looper received a surprising text from his player indicating it was not just for the week, but for good! This youngster has decided to pack it in altogether and quit playing the Tour I was told.
When opportunity knocks: One veteran caddie who missed the cut was paired with a Korean who made it with a local on the bag. He convinced papa to hire him for the weekend.
Open weather: Usually, it’s a test of heat and humidity but not at Saucon Valley. It has even been a bit cool at times. The Gold Bond Powder stock must have took a hit this week.
Eyes wide shut: -“She’s gone. It’s just a question of whether it’s a firing or a resignation,” one veteran player, described as a Bivens supporter, told Golf Digest. “And she doesn’t deserve any of it.”- She should have meant her salary.
And finally, LPGA to pick interim leader.
Larry,
Good job covering the Open…Any idea who will be working for Alfie??
No clue. Someone with a tough skin I hope.
Seven most recent tournament winners have all be non-Americans. Can we come to any conclusions?!
Keep the Americans captive and force-feed them golf 24/7?
Larry, so can you tell us who the young player is that is quitting the tour?
Sorry Johnny B, she may change her mind and I’d be up a creek.
I know this is a very unpopular opinion on this site. But, I would rather have a more complete interview with an interpreter than to have someone struggle with English and the accent.
With the interpreter we learned that the winner was very nervous on the last put (no surprise) and was still very nervous(and she was the winner). Without an interpreter we might have gotten part one, but probably not part two.
With a good interpreter, and this seemed to be a good interpreter, the conversation will flow because we are really getting the golfer’s nuances in language, not what she is struggling to say in English.
If an American deaf since birth and unable to speak won a tournament, would you deny her an American Sign Language interpreter.
The are hundreds of languages spoken in the US besides English Give someone in her early twenties time to learn English. Use a good interpreter and we’ll get more information in her interviews.
Apparently you missed the part when I said she spoke English. I asked a caddie who works for another Korean and said she would have been able to give an interview. Your analogy of the deaf person is illogical. A person unable to speak is quite different than one who can but won’t. Ji didn’t seem to have any problem communicating with her caddie did she?
With Zach on Eun-Hee’s bag and Jeff King on Candie Kung there’s going to be carnage in Caddietown tonight!
great posts, larry. an interesting perspective on the tour and the people behind the shades. any other loopers blogging?
cheers,
nocurling
Not that I know of.
Funny how I was just thinking about how the asians train their athletes in a strict regimen from very young. You gotta say that they get the results. However, you gotta wonder what kinda quality of life the athletes really have. Different culture, different values!
Yes, those Koreans sure do value WINNING a lot on our Tour!
More than just winning RCH. Many internal rivalries I heard.
The internal rivalries don’t surprise me. Among the Asian races, the Koreans are regarded as the most competitive and arrogant IN GENERAL. Not saying all, but most….
Larry,
Is there any talk of who will be the interium Commish??
Larry,
Good job on the coverage of the opening.Another great job by Lifeontour. Larry you know that Ji speaks english, do you believe because of the excitement she felt it was better to use the tour rep? I believe that these girls have a life outside of golf. Speaking of course about those you speak so much about. In a lot of situations these families are not country club families with money and the big house on the 12th. hole at some fancy club. I have heard that in some cases they only hit balls at the range. Imagine that pounding balls on a golf range for about 3 yrs. straight. Imagine carrying the weight of the family on your shoulders as a 12 year old who suppose to the be the next big cheese. So many make it and alot don’t, look on the Futures tour. they have there group of asian players who will never reach the LPGA, still they play. With all the resources American girls have their dedication is not there in some areas. The more you put in the more the pay out in most situations.”The Queen Bee” Miss Pak was like Jackie Robinson to American blacks who were shut out of baseball and other sports for years. When blacks were allowed in the league they were successful.Hard work is paying off with the Asian golfers. I believe the best should play week to week. Everyone is talking about sponsors wanting to see American golfers on tv as I do to, I also want to see good golf and not just a pretty face who speaks english and can sell soap. Golf was exciting this past weekend,C K was doing her dam&^% thing. I loved to see her kick the golf bag,she has fire inside it needs to catch on with other American players. CK will win her share of tournaments and players will still talk smack about her now let them step their game up to be as competitive as CK and then maybe who cares about the Korean players, or Chinese or Japanese or Swedes for that matter. Like Nike says “Just Do It”
Paragraphs….Live it, love it, use it.
The hard work is forced on them Red Zone through cultural pressure. Obsessive parents not players produce winners. How can you compare Se Ri to Jackie Robinson? When were Asians shut out? The Japanese payed on tour for many years. Asians will never attract a large American fan base which is sorely needed. It’s not about the best players but the best all-around product to attract sponsors and they are not it. A perfect example was in Corning a couple years back. It was a play-off between two Koreans and the fans started leaving before the play-off began. There needs to be restrictions on the number of all foreign players.
I remember that. I heard that the Korean vs. Korean playoff inspired many to leave early with a hankering for Chinese food….
Ms. Ji hit an absolutely wonderful putt to win the Open. Downhill, L to R sweeper on of the hardest in golf. Did anyone but me notice the speed when it went in. She obviously was putting to win the Championship. Kudo’s to her!!!
Having said that, how many who viewed this stellar performance could pick her out of a line-up of Asians.
The fact she chose not to speak English only adds to her obscurity. I agree with Larry about the Se Ri comparison…ludicrous. Se Ri did stumble along in English after her victories and we got some.
sense of “who she is”
Term limits for Asian on the LPGA
So what does anyone know about Marty Evans?
Good person.
I don’t know much about Marty Evans. But I do know all of the high ranking military officers have character, integrity, and a good sense of business. They all do the right thing for the organization they serve. It’s not about them.
Rumor (from good sources) has it that Corning,NY might get The LPGA Legends tour to come to Corning. They do take carts and caddies
Uh oh…. The interim Commish is also a dictator that’s been kicked out by the Red Cross Board of Directors….
http://blogs.golf.com/presstent/2009/07/bivens-replacement-has-had-board-clash-of-her-own-.html
I unfortunately lived the “wide right” kick being a born and raised Buffalo Bills fan. His name was Scott Norwood. Anyway, love your blog. We here in Western NY are hoping Wegmans will now be able to sign on for a long time!!!!!
I was close. All fixed.
The more I learn about this interim Commish, the more I question the LPGA Board’s choice. They need someone who will put a “kinder, gentler face” on the LPGA, not a military command & control leader type who was fired by the Red Cross’ Board of Directors.
While this is supposedly a temporary place filler until a more permanent Commissioner is found, we’ve all heard that before. True leader types find it hard to relinquish power when the time comes….
Did anyone notice the Washington Post Article that Marsha Evans was ousted from the National Red Cross because of her “months of a steadily deteriorating relationship with the organization’s governing board”. Further quoting “the Red Cross’s board’s executive committee was unhappy with her communication and collaboration with the 50-member Board of Governors and that the board believed she needed to change her “command-and-control” management style”.
Scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, I didn’t notice. I only just posted a link to that story a few comemnts before yours….
Who says the US educational system is going to hell in a handbasket….?
Larry if you have time, read all the posts in this thrread on the GEA golf discussion board.:

Very interesting comments and opinions. The folks there really care about golf and want the LPGA to succede but their opinions on best way to accomplish success vary quite a bit.
We’ll miss Bivens…hubby Bill, that is. A truly nice guy! As for Carolyn, GOOD RIDDANCE!
