LPGA Allows Lexi Thompson To Enter Q-School

That’s the big news not The Open, at least today. Here’s the article. In my opinion it’s a good move. She’s got the game and the LPGA desperately needs a “home gown” talent to promote. She still has to make it through but the chances are excellent.

Open news:

An area below the pro shop (the caddie HQ) was offered as club storage on Monday but drew concern as it was unsecured. The local was changed on Tuesday to where the members store their sticks. I bet many caddies were relieved. Toting the bats home every day, especially if you don’t have a rental car, would be a pain.

The 10th tee is not near the club house so players starting on the back will have to take a shuttle to the 18th tee then complete a long trek.

Then there was this:

What ever happened to the announcement concerning the China tournament? July 1st was the deadline I thought. Will there be a replacement or should we forget about it? I think I know the answer.

I certainly agree with you that the motivation to allow Thompson to enter Q school early was probably to “breath” some life into the tour. But I do disagree with the decision. Others have had to wait, she should too. Special treatment should not have been given IMHO.

Actually BeeGee, the treatment is the same. Each case is evaluated separately but the LPGA is in a bad place right now. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

  2. since Lexi has a rolex ranking she does not have to go thru the initial stage in Daytona in late July. Based on her record in the US this year she may have some work to do on her game.

    • Awsi Dooger says:

Lexi is listed among the entrants in first stage. During the US Open telecast today Dottie Pepper said Lexi would have to raise her Rolex ranking 20 spots into the top 100 to bypass first stage. That did not happen at +11 MC.

Lexi apparently will play Evian then fly back to Daytona immediately prior to Q School, with no time for a practice round.

Shouldn’t be a problem advancing through that stage, given the makeup of the field, high percentage amateurs. But Lexi’s game itself looks amateurish at this point. Johnny Miller couldn’t get himself to describe one of Lexi’s flailing follow throughs today, other than to kindly say it was “different.” She proceeded to muff a chip, then later miss badly on a short putt.

I’m not discounting her talent or her length off the tee but she looks less polished every time I see her, including the rounded back.

Do you think if Thompson is on tour it will increase sponserships and underwriters for tournaments? I know the pat answer is “it can’t hurt” but is it the reality?

    • MissingBrainCellsButNotStupid says:

Michelle Wie was to play that role a few years ago, but the Tour has continued its’ slide. Michelle never became the “teen sensation” as she was billed. It’s an awesome load for any person to shoulder…especially one so young.
