First Impression

The following is a cursory preview, received yesterday, of the new venue for the 2013 Kia Classic by a long time volunteer of many LPGA events.

I just looked at the driving range at Aviara Golf Club.  It is smaller than Highland Meadows [Toledo]. Room for about 16 players without really squeezing them. Set up for 12 with bag stands now. It funnels into the hill. A big slice will end up in the 18th fairway.  Putting green is long and narrow.

There will be a meeting tomorrow for volunteer chairpersons. Maybe they will have more about the logistics. My first impression is not good.

Then there was this:

The Aviara home page mentions the ecological concerns related to the surrounding wetlands. Hope they don’t have the same restrictions as the Trump National in Palos Verdes, where the 2005 Office Depot was held. An absolute disaster as far as the logistics of a full-field tournament. Rounds were taking more than 6 hrs. because every time a ball was hit into the protected areas, players had to get a ruling. And the officials couldn’t drive a cart off of the designated paths where the fans were also jostling for viewing positions.
