Auburn coach Danielle Downey dies in car crash

LPGA Release:

We are very saddened to inform you on the passing of Danielle Downey who was killed in a single car accident last night in Auburn, Alabama.  Danielle played on the LPGA Tour from 2006 through the 2010 season.
Most currently, Danielle has been the Director of Operations for Auburn University Golf Programs.

Following a great career at Auburn University, Danielle came to play on the Futures and LPGA Tours. During her time on the Futures Tour, she notched seven top-10 finishes and one tournament victory at the 2004 Lima Memorial Hospital Futures Golf Classic. On the LPGA Tour, Downey had her career best with a tie for fourth at the 2008 Bell Micro LPGA Classic.

Danielle finished out her career with the LPGA caddying for Sarah Kemp and Laura Diaz.

In 2012 and 2013 Danielle filled in to take the place of Auburn head coach Kim Evans, who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, therefore missing the postseason. Downey guided the team through NCAA Regionals, earning a place in the NCAA Championship in Athens, Ga. Auburn would go on to take sixth at NCAAs, the team’s best finish at the tournament in eight years.

We will keep you posted via the player extranet as we gather more information from the family. Please keep Danielle’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Twist of Fate

January 30, 2014

Meaghan Francella knew it was time to think about another career… So what was Francella doing in the Bahamas last week? Looping for Heather Bowie Young, her new boss…

Francella had been bartending at The Bistro in Jupiter and looping part-time at Old Marsh. She called 20 clubs trying to get a caddie job before finding success.

Click the link below and scroll down for more details.

Lewis’ momentum; Francella’s gig; more

You can’t play golf on a sheet of ice (except in Canada) so I had another day off. That will change tomorrow. A group of around eighty will be here for three days and the temperature will rise significantly. Down right tropical by Sunday.

Lizette Salas ‏TweetsPlease keep fellow LPGA player Lisa Ferrero in your prayers as she just found out she is diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 31.

It Could Be Worse

January 29, 2014

A Balmy 23° in Biloxi when I woke.

Bridges closed, a casino shuttered and an ice rink outside my door.

It’s dropping to 17° at the course tonight. I may have another day off. Will be waiting for the call.

Then there was this:

LPGA Monitoring Thailand In Preparation Of Honda LPGA Thailand – It was the same when I went there once. Due to an obvious over reaction, it was decreed that we all had to stay at the player hotel. But that only lasted one night. Way too expensive for us loopers.

Staying Home

January 27, 2014

The next two days are going to be brutal here. Freezing rain tomorrow then lows in the teens on Wednesday with snow. Snow?

This time of year Fallen Oak is closed on Tuesdays anyway but another day was added for the weather.

First One In The Books

January 26, 2014

Korda wins by one. Didn’t see a minute of it. I was on divot duty.

Plenty of red numbers. Was the weather good or did they set it up as a pitch-n-putt?

Congrats to Scraper and his hoarse. T7 and $31,543 in the bank, Not a bad paycheck for the first event.

Beth Ann Nichols Tweets – Asked Stacy Lewis about the blisters on her feet. Turns out she had to buy an emergency pair of golf shoes in the pro shop. Cost: $337!

You’re welcome Beth Ann. 🙂

How Cold Was It?

January 24, 2014

Cold enough to leave icicles on our only cart that went out for the day. It was 29° when I left the course at 3pm.

IMG_20140124_150109 Brrrrrrr!

The first cut of the year came in at +1. A stroke less than I thought. Doesn’t seem there were any surprises.

Looks like “Scraper” snagged a live one in P. K. Kongkraphan who is currently T5. Still two rounds to go so hope I didn’t jinx him.

Paige Mackenzie Tweets – I am unfortunately not in Bahamas playing this week….I have a herniated disc and have surgery scheduled

Beth Ann Nichols Tweets – Jenny Suh, who got engaged on Dec. 19, has her fiancé on the bag. He came for the casino but the caddie gig is working nicely. She’s in 3rd.

She also tweets that Martha Richards has resigned as head coach of Texas. Big news. Richards will step down at the end of spring for health reasons. She’s healthy now, but cancer survivor thinks it best to leave coaching.

Ticket To Paradise

January 23, 2014

Comes at a steep price. My “insider” in the Bahamas passed these two items along.

Golf writer Ron Sirak showed up to play in Pure Silk pro-am but forgot golf balls. Buys a dozen Pro Vs in The Ocean Club pro shop for $125.

Stacy Lewis needed golf shoes. A pair of Footjoys set her back $337.

What could a round of golf possibly be?

Then there was this:

Ko to use former Nicklaus caddie – Mystery solved and it looks like it’s working so far. I have a feeling a chimp would do just as well. Sometimes you just step out of the way with a player of that caliber.
