Texas Shootout 2016 – Round 2

April 29, 2016

The prediction of all day t-storms and two inches of rain never happened. Teed off on time.

They played ball in hand in anticipation. That kept the scores down considerably. Eventually the round was suspended around four.

A fourteen year old amateur made the cut. Karah Sanford shot –2 to finish even.

An ongoing weekly scam is to pass along the wrist band – that allows you in to player dining – to other family members  but the security guard at the door is on to it. Making everyone put it on their wrist instead of just showing it. Can’t imagine what that costs the sponsors each week.

The Wi-Fi is screaming fast at the clubhouse. Equal to what we had at volunteer Dave’s in Rancho Mirage.

Stimp and fetch it? (please, no comments) Taking a reading on the ninth this morning. Running at 11.5.

Yueer Cindy Feng (my former employer) has her dad on the bag this week. I wonder, if she misses the cut, will he fire himself? At least he has it easy. She’s using a light carry bag.

The food in the caddie tent is the same as player dining I understand. “Top notch. Top notch.” Isn’t that a line from Caddyshack?

Texas Shootout 2016 – Wednesday

April 27, 2016

Knock, knock. Who’s there? The start of a joke? One player only wished. That was an 8am Monday morning visit by the Olympic drug testers at her hotel this week. Each possible contestant has to log where they will be staying for just such an occasion.

“Country Club Mike” is in the house Picked up Jane Rah for the week. If she has a dismal week putting, here’s why.

The top two scores were reversed on the Monday qualifier. Popson won and Collier finished second. She needed that eagle on the final hole to avoid a playoff. Philly Phil is on Collier’s bag for the week.

The no shagging putts rule by caddies is still in effect. They posted the old rules in the caddie area. That’s good news.

Heard last week’s winner was unaware of the rule regarding building a stance in a bunker. I assume there was not enough evidence to warrant a penalty.

It was another split pro-am today. Nine holes with two different pros. Seemed very disorganized.

Everyone had caddies. Vicki Goetz-Ackerman, President of the LPGA, even looped nine holes this morning.

Heard the LPGA Legends Tour is running short of contestants and is considering lowering the qualifying age to forty.

Callaway Rep. Jeff Opheim is also here this week subbing for Barry Lyda.

What’s the deal with iPhones? I sent the above pic to myself through Danny’s phone and got ten copies. Volunteer Dave could send a text to an Android phone and they would receive it immediately but not another iPhone. Another caddie using Android keeps getting the same text over and over from his buddy’s  iPhone.

Saw a caddie pushing a trolley in the Monday qualifier. Turns out he had an ADA exemption. Hanna Collier eagled her final hole to finish first.

The caddie HQ this week has VIP status as far as we’re concerned. Some of the best food there is. Quinoa salad was actually on the menu which only a couple guys knew what it was. Too highbrow for this crowd but we’ll take it.

Caddie HQ is also the place to get some homework finished. Some loopers need all the help they can get as Jeff Steffler reveals. His new nickname is “Jeff Three Books”. Then again, a cool soda is all that Bully needs.

Starting last week, the no caddies shagging putts rule has been rescinded. Unless otherwise posted, the intrusive practice is now permitted once more.

More loopers received pink slips besides me the last couple weeks. Some by mutual agreement, some not. One from a rather famous (or infamous) player.

Samantha Richdale had a seventy-four year old trolley pusher on the bag when she won the Symetra event in Lake Wales. Old guys rule!

Did anyone notice Haru Nomura building a stance in the bunker during the telecast on Sunday? It’s been mentioned.

Too many errant tee balls has us watching from the sidelines once more.

On Monday I was offered $1,000 bonus if we finished top ten. On Tuesday an additional offer (make it an ultimatum) was proposed. If we missed the cut, I’m fired. Anyone know of an open bag next week? 🙂

Over my caddie career I have seen and experienced many oddball things but some of the stuff this week is just …

Ran into Golf Channel on-course reporter Karen Stupples this morning. She was doing homework for the telecast and noted the pins were more challenging today then the first two rounds. Deservedly so I say. Make ‘em work for it on the weekend.

April 21, 2016

Our first shot of the day went dead right followed by the provisional. The result was a quad on our first hole, number ten, but played the other seventeen one under par. Sitting at +3

We had help from an official during the search and of course, he had the stopwatch running. It looks like neither the original or provisional ball would be found and I expected a trip back to the tee was forthcoming but divine providence (or maybe it was just a good eye) intervened. With literally five seconds remaining, I found the provisional. Before you say it, no, I did not have an extra pellet and a hole in my pocket for just such an occasion. 🙂

The weather could not have been better this morning. Cool and calm. Great for scoring as our playing partner So Yeon Ryu showed. She’s the leader.

Drive over five hours to watch women’s golf? Not former LPGA looper Rick Ried. He came to see his buds. Me and Jeff Steffler make a pair of handsome bookends. 😉

Swinging Skirts 2016 Pro-Am

April 20, 2016

My player is Yueer Cindy Feng.

E-9’d the front by ourselves. Plenty of practice with no one behind us.

Left the course around one. The shuttle back to M Lot ( a parking garage down the street) was so tardy I decided to walk. I stopped at an ATM on the way to withdraw some needed cash then proceeded up the four flights of stairs to my car. The unmistakable sound of a flat tire caught my attention one floor short of my destination. It turned out to be another caddie, Ralph Scarinzi.

I offered to help but when we opened the trunk, no spare was to found. Upon further inspection, an electronic inflator was in its stead. Good enough as long as the leak wasn’t too large. But hold on. It’s useless if the cigarette lighter outlet has a blown fuse which it must have. There was no power to be found but there was another option. My car. I pulled along side, plugged it in and within a minutes, Ralph was on his way to exchange his ride for something else.

I absolutely abhor red-eye flights and the one from Hawaii on Sunday was no exception. Given the cost restraints, it was my only option.

I arrived at the airport twelve hours early. I know, I know, spending the time at Waikiki would have been a better alternative but the weather was lousy (a dreary mist) and I just wasn’t feelin’ it. So I spent some time with volunteer Dave in the United Club but when he left, so did I.

To alleviate the boredom I strolled the terminal but that didn’t go so well. Part of it is outdoors and the combination of damp sidewalk and the Crocs I had on did not make for a good combination. I went down like a sack of potatoes falling off the truck! More embarrassed than hurt, I remained inside for the duration.

Even though I had the best coach seat on the plane (exit row with no seat in front of me) I still couldn’t sleep and my right hip felt out of whack. Couldn’t get comfortable. Rack up another awful experience.

Swinging Skirts 2016 – Tuesday

April 19, 2016

My player is Yueer Cindy Feng.

Played the back nine yesterday and the front today. Looks like an E-9 tomorrow.

The weather has been perfect. That will all end starting Thursday. Figures. We have the same tee times as last week. Even which side we tee off.

I absolutely love this course. Position off the tee and onto the greens is the key. Reminds me of some tracks we’ve played in the northeast. Right now the greens are releasing quiet a bit but the forecast of rain may change that.

No charge for bibs this week or towels either. I guess they don’t trust howlies in Hawaii. 🙂

And the qualifiers are:

An ominous trend this season seems to be the lack of volunteers. It happened again this week.

As a matter of fact, Bully and I are staying with one of them in San Carlos about thirty miles south.

Rental cars are pricey in this part of the woods so I decided to try something different. Booked a ride on FlightCar which is a peer-to-peer service that rents out private vehicles. I got a Prius with 54,757 miles on it for $166.95 out the door.
