Kia Classic 2017 Pro-Am

March 22, 2017

I was considering getting a guaranteed $100 loop but the rain kept me away. Had a wheel alignment on my ride done instead. It was pulling right but OK now.

Went to the course around noon. Immediately received food vouchers for the rest of the week by another caddie. I must be looking desperate. 🙂

I was about to use one of the vouchers when Rick Wynn asked if anyone wanted his extra In-N-Out burger. Bought two but could only down one. Went for that instead. Used the voucher for a roast beef sandwich to go when I departed. Nothing like free eats.

I was standing next to a player and her caddie Jeff by the fountain in the caddie are. She had her foot on the top of the small concrete wall stretching her hamstring when another player snuck up from behind and gave her a huge slap on the butt. Jeff immediately declared “That was not me!” which had anyone within earshot cracking up.

Kia Classic 2017 – Tuesday

Sincerest condolences go out to caddie Rick Kropf and his family. Rick’s dad passed away yesterday at the age of ninety-one.

Hung at the course till around one. Yesterday they gave out bag lunches but starting today, coupons in one’s caddie packet must be redeemed at a concession stand. Since Maddie didn’t make it I was out of luck, or so I thought. Found out that if you look destitute enough, someone will hand you an extra. Had the brat and a bag of Fritos. 🙂

Revo Sunglasses are giving out a free pair to all players and caddies this week. One thing about mirrored glasses, when some dufus extols the details of some inane anecdote, you can roll your eyes and he he doesn’t know. Which happened.

A cooler was placed backwards next to the putting green which meant you had to practically stand in the flowers to pull out a drink because only half of the lid opened up. This was bugging me so I turned it around. Shortly after, a guy walks up and must have gotten a drink earlier because he tied to open the back. When that didn’t work, he then opened the front and, apparently not seeing what he was searching for, tried to open the back again. DOH! Here’s your sign.

This is not a Chinese puzzle box.

“Scraper” finally got out of dreary old Portland and has landed in the state of eternal sunshine (well, maybe not this year). Working for Becky Morgan.

A shady character was hanging in the caddied area and putting green and security was called to check him out. They said he’s always around and is OK. Didn’t they say that about Jack Ruby?

Had a hankering for fried chicken after the round yesterday and stopped in the local Albertsons Supermarket. Had to be the scrawniest dried up pieces I’ve ever seen. Makes the the stuff from Walmart look like gourmet fare. As far as supermarket chicken goes, Publix is the best going away.

My player is Madeleine Sheils.

Shot +4. Scores here.

Many non-qualifiers are playing the Symetra event in Beaumont CA but we’re taking the week off. Will play next week in Mesa though.

Played a practice round with Demi Runas on Sunday and was paired with her yesterday.

“The beast” arrived just in time for the practice round on the hills of California.

Looks like yardage book has been bugged by the CIA. Congress needs to investigate.

The motels here are outrageously overpriced so I rolled he dice on this Airbnb offering. Turned out pretty good. No TV but good internet which is most important. 15 minutes to the course and walking distance to downtown San Marcos. Only drawback is my room is on the third floor and the bathroom is on the second. Plenty of stairs to maneuver. Thirty to be exact.

We all know the length of Thai names rain havoc on caddie bibs and leader boards and it looks like the tee time sheet is no exception.

-8 for Sandra Changkija yesterday. Got in as an alternate for Kris Tamulis and has Portland John on the bag.

Monday qualifier Kaylin Yost is still is on fire. Shot –5 today.

Through some miscommunication, I was overtly optimistic regarding Greg’s recovery. He’s still in one heck of a fight. I sincerely apologize. But it is great to see him up and about and doing what he loves.

The coffee in the caddie tent and volunteer HQ is simply pathetic. They must be drawing the water through a hose that is not supposed to be used for drinking water. Has that distinctive plastic taste. YUK!

They’re building the wall. The one around the course to keep out the non-ticket holders, that is.

1993 was the year of the duck’s demise by Anne Marie Palli for those interested.

The latest former LPGA pro to turn caddie is Dewi Claire Schreefel. She’s looping for Brittany Altomare.

1st and 2nd runner-up quotes of the week: “Not remembering happens a lot”. From one of the caddies reminiscing about the good old days when he could party well into the night and still loop in the morning.

We were lamenting the fact that there is no need for a child care truck since the players were so young and do not have children. That brought this response from someone who shall remain nameless. “Heck, half the tour should be in child care”.

Founders Cup 2017 Wednesday

March 15, 2017

Maddie wanted to have a second set of eyes for her putting so I traveled to McComick Ranch Golf Course this morning to watch her receive a lesson.

Yesterday was Pi day so naturally, caddies celebrated by having a pie of their own. One option of the daily food voucher is a pizza. Not a mini as one would expect but a full sized pie. Enough to feed three normal loopers or one Scraper.

After staining his new $9 day glow shirt with sauce, Jeffery improvised by using a towel as a bib.

I opted for the ham and cheese panini. No ham, no cheese. I think it was pastrami. Looks like the double hamburger is the best option.

Picked up my 2017 caddie credential yesterday. Actually got my sir name correct this go around. They failed three times last year.

Looks like Greg Sheridan is on the mend. Out catching dinner.

Someone was missing their morning elixir yesterday. Left them in the parking lot. No worries. There’s free Starbucks in the restaurant.

Decide to replace my rubber with four new Pirelli P4s from Sam’s Club instead of doing it piecemeal. Checked around and they had the best deal. 90,000 warranty! Good to know they’ll be plenty of tread remaining when it eventually craps out. 🙂

My player is Madeleine Sheils.

Didn’t make it with +2. Perfect conditions and they lit it up.

The LPGA now has a link to the qualifying scores. Click here for this week’s.

We had a 7:50 tee time and the desert setting was absolutely fantastic.

Maddie chipping by moonlight FOunders Cup qualifier

Maddie chipping with a setting moon.

Quote of the week: An alternate was in our group in the stead of AC Tanguay. We discovered that Don, her local caddie, founded Cold Stone Creamery. They eventually merged with another company and he was forced out but not to be deterred, started another venture. He now owns a nutritional supplement company.  “I used to kill ‘em, now I save ‘em.” is Don’s tag line now. 🙂

We had a French player in our group which brought out former LPGA and current Legends player, Anne Marie Palli, on our second nine. She didn’t know her but being a fellow country woman, she was curious and wished to lend her support.

We offered our hellos and Maddie conversed with her along the way. Anne Marie remembered Maddie from the last Legends event when she worked for Val Skinner. Given my propensity to relate a story about the old days to Maddie when ever I have a chance, this was a perfect opportunity.

Way back when we played Randolph Park in Tucson, Anne Marie clocked a duck in flight on her approach shot to the ninth green. The ball went into a pond and she requested a ruling. Thought she should get a do over but that wasn’t happening. Don’t know what happened to the duck. The following year, the ill fated duck was added to the yardage book by the creator, “Gorgeous George” Lucas. BTW if anyone still has that book, could you take a picture of that page and send it to me.

That jogged my memory a little more. Anne Marie has a distinctive French accent and one of the caddies, (Carl “The Machine” to be exact) could do a fantastic imitation. So good in fact that he would call other loopers pretending to be Anne Marie and would be very believable.

Afterwards, I went to Wildfire to hang. Grabbed a sandwich in the caddie tent then hooked up with “Upstate Jay” for some stimulating conversation. Plenty of new faces out. Heard there was four major caddie changes after the Asian swing but don’t ask who. Cant remember.
