Island Resort Championship 2017 – Wednesday

June 21, 2017

My player is Jiayi Zhou.

Early nine this morning ahead of the afternoon pro-am. Glorious weather unlike yesterday which started cold and ended wet.

Speaking of wet, it’s been raining here on and off for many days so we’ll be playing it up for sure. Sweetgrass affected by heavy rain

The “Bassters Fishing Derby” is tomorrow and our group noticed the sign by the fifteenth green. None of them being fishermen (or is it fisherwomen?), the term was confused with “bastards”. I quickly corrected the mistake. 🙂 Here are the pics from last year.

June 25, 2016

My player is Madeleine Sheils.

+1 one today. Aiming for a top ten.

Twosomes tomorrow if the storms pass though early.

During the rules meeting on Thursday, Tiffany Priest uttered a vague reference to Barney Fife from the Andy Griffith Show. Wonder how many of the of youngsters got it?

Was talking to JR. Found out she was the one that had to give the ruling to Anne-Marie Palli when she hit the duck on the ninth in Tuscon. 🙂

Bassters Fishing Derby

June 24, 2016

One of the highlights of the week is the Bassters Fishing Derby held on the bridge leading to the island par three, fifteenth. Players pair up in teams and have forty-five minutes to catch as many bass as possible. First place goes to the total weight of their best five catches.

The team of Marita Engzelius and Liv Chang angled their way into first and split $500. An extra prize of $100 went to Christine Meier for the biggest fish. The winning lunker was around two and a half pounds.

Winner, winner, let’s have fish for dinner.

If there was a booby prize it would have gone to Allie Knight for hooking a crappie. Good try though.

Island Resort Championship – Round 1

June 24, 2016

My player is Madeleine Sheils.

Two under today. Very steady.

Played with the Symetra Tour leading money winner, Madeline Sangstrom. Let me tell you, she is the real deal. Very long, plays aggressively but smart, great short game and a super attitude. She will win in her first year on the LPGA.

Bully is looping for Peiyun Chien this week. Shot –5 and is in the lead.

Island Resort Championship – Thursday

June 23, 2016

My player is Madeleine Sheils.

Placed third in the pro-am. Played with the Tournament Director/ Casino Manager. Plenty of laughs and a nice gratuity at the end.

Caddies were invited to the pro-am party and I took advantage. Great food and drink.

Maddie was in charge of the LPGA Snapchat feed yesterday.

This is Sweetgrass’ version of the Bushwood caddie shack on Tuesday. The  baseball team from local Post 438 baseball team were offering their services.

From the eighteenth tee you can see the hotel and its water tower. It’s 620 yards to the the ball on top but plays 728 adjusted for elevation. Info only a caddie would appreciate. 🙂

Heard one player state that she had a great practice session late Tuesday evening. Outlasted every Asian. 🙂

I was in Boise for the Nationwide Tour back in 2003. There was a best-ball shoot-out of John Daly and Michelle Wie vs Hank Kuehne and Nancy Lopez. Maddie was there also. She was thirteen years old at the time.

There was a rules meeting this morning conducted by the new kid on the block, Tiffany Priest, and JR. Very well done.

Island Resort Championship 2016 – Wednesday

June 22, 2016

My player is Maddie Sheils.

In the afternoon pro-am today so I’ll post this early.

I’m staying with Tom Borwick for the second week in a row. We departed South Bend on Sunday and overnighted in Racine Wisconsin to take in The Open and NBA finals. In the morning, Tom went straight to Harris but I took a different path.

The route went through Green Bay and Lambeau Field was calling so I stopped in and took the tour. After some team history by our tour guide, we visited one of the luxury boxes and went down to the field. Newly drafted Green Bay quarterback Brett Hundley was in our group which made it extra special.

We’re staying at the Island Resort Casino Hotel this week which is adjacent to the Sweetgrass Golf Course. Expensive but worth it. No driving and you can roll out of bed and go right to work if you have to. We get a $5 drink credit along with another $5 for food each day so it cuts the final bill considerably.

We also get $5 off a spa treatment but they didn’t have those fish that eat the dead skin off your feet so I passed.

We’re in room 4758 which is not on the fourth floor. It’s on the seventh. Go figure. We had to go back to the lobby to find out.

When we applied for our Player’s Card, they noticed my birthday was this month and was given a very nifty resort coffee mug. Coffee is on the house all day so it’ll get plenty of use.

Walked the Monday and it’s in great shape. Nice to have a good yardage book to work with. Last week’s was deplorable. I heard they wouldn’t let anyone do a book. They just copied one from years past.

Behind the thirteenth green lies an unusually large block of wood devoid of life. The eagle sculpture is impressive also. 🙂

You never know what you may run in to when communing with nature but when faced with adversity, it’s fight or flight. I decided on the former.

Island Resort Championship – Second Round

June 27, 2015

42-35 on the card but we’re playing tomorrow.

This course is set up way too short. Only two decent length par fours. Today they shortened one of those holes. On the flip side, the par threes are excellent.

Escanaba is in the Eastern Time Zone and the Island Resort course in Central. To avoid confusion we play on Eastern time.

Had two WDs yesterday. One a hip injury but the other was pure happenstance. During the shuttle ride from one green to two tee, a player holding on to her pull cart got it caught in the bridge abutment and she hurt her shoulder.

June 26, 2015

B-Ham came in with a steady three under. Good start.

Brandi Rodriguez was one of the Southern Miss players Tex used to bring in to caddie at Fallen Oak. Now she’s out here playing. Quite a progression.

Mary Narzisi carded a eagle on one (her tenth hole) and made an extra $100 bonus for her effort.

Yesterday’s pro-am party featured a hypnotist. He had a bunch of players on stage falling asleep, smelling their own shoes and doing all sorts of silly things. (pictures from The Symetra Tour Twitter feed)

There was also a team fishing contest in the pond on fifteen. No shortage of extra curricular activities this week.

Escanaba Thursday

June 25, 2015

Had the day off. B-Ham just worked with her coach.

Her coach also works with Mary Narzisi and they’re both first off tomorrow. Unfortunately, on different nines.

Yesterday I finalized my motel reservation for next week. The first four days through Priceline and the last two with Hotwire at a different motel. It was the only way to get a room for the entire week without getting totally hosed. I prefer to stay by myself so it’s going to be an expensive stay.

The snafu with the yardage books this week had me go right to the source for the upcoming Tullymore Championship. It’s a new event so an existing book is not an option. I sent a text to “Kenny The Wizard” (made this week’s book also) and learned that 50-100 “tour bibles” will be there this Saturday and the remainder on Monday. Good news. No delay completing our homework.

Rick “The Nerd” did a book for the Toyota Danielle Downey Classic in Rochester. They were good friends so he is donating all the money (not just the profits) to the Danielle Downey Scholarship Fund.

The Road To Escanaba

June 22, 2015

Not a whole lot of good to speak about in the final round in South Bend so I’ll let that lie.

There is one thing I would like to touch on. Kudos to the filed staff on the course set up. The tee on the par five ninth was moved up and was now reachable in two blows. Salanee Henderson did it in our group and came close to bagging an elusive albatross. She shot seven under and finished T2. Also, the par four  eleventh was moved up seventy yards and was now drivable.

I’m sticking with Britney as of now so my plan to see my friends in Arkansas was nixed.

The title of this post sounds like a Bob Hope escapade but there wasn’t a laugh to be had. The trip to the upper peninsula was a continuation of the day’s maladies. My car crapped-out just north of Chicago on I-294. It just stopped running which put me into a slight panic.

My thoughts in order where; call for service through my insurance company; find a hotel; when could I make it to Escanaba? But the best was almost forgotten.

Almost a year ago to the day, my car did the same thing after my trip to Bentonville AR to caddie the Walmart event. The problem was the emergency fuel pump shutoff (it’s like a circuit breaker in case of an accident) which had to be replaced. With nothing to lose, I located the switch in the right side of the trunk behind the fabric liner and found that the reset button was tripped. I pushed it back in and hoped for the best. Voila! It started right up.

I later stopped for coffee and an order of Burger King’s $1.149 chicken nugget special (that’s all they’re worth by the way) and it conked-out again. Another reset and I made it the rest of the way.

This morning it failed to start once more but the button wasn’t tripped. I jiggled the wires and it started right up.

Third consecutive week I’m lodging at America’s Best Value Inn. This time I Pricelined it. The Renuzit on the counter failed to mask the pungent odor of Indian cuisine which stung my olfactory lobe upon entering the lobby. “What else is new?” I thought. Are every one of these franchises run by the Patel clan?

The room is the best so far except for the antiquated TV. It’s been a long time since I stared at a 27” Phillips CRT. The picture sucks. Also, I’m at the end of the building so it takes a while for the hot water to arrive but when it does, all is fine.

Caddie updates: Bully is at “the show” in Arkansas looping for Candy Hannemann and Tom Borwick is headed back to LA. He will play chauffer/caddie for a youngster in the Junior World Championship and his or her family. He didn’t even know the name. They are from Malaysia and needed a tour guide.

J.D. was in the house last week. Forgot who’s bag he was on.

There definitely is a failure to communicate out here. I went out to walk the course this morning but the yardage books weren’t ready. Walked the back nine anyway. I set up a password protected caddie info website years ago that would be perfect out here. All I need is the info. Would be great for fact sheets, yardage book info and motel deals.
